In 2002, James Weaver started DutchCreek Design in the upper level of his barn. His oldest son was seven at the time. Today, that son, Larry, is a part owner, and three other sons are involved in the business.
James has had an interest in art from a young age, so designing executive desks with detailed crowns, inset panels, and other distinctive features came naturally. His experience as a builder also shaped his approach to design. Could he adjust a design to speed up production? Could he size a panel to match standard material dimensions and reduce waste? By combining an artist’s eye with a builder’s practical experience, James developed a design approach that continues to set DutchCreek Design apart.
That blend of creativity and practical thinking also shaped a pivotal decision in 2008. During the economic recession, orders slowed, and James realized his existing shop left little room for expansion. Rather than wait for business to pick up, he took advantage of the opportunity to purchase a 40-acre property and build a new facility. While orders were slow, employees helped set up the new shop for efficient production. James also worked with designers to completely revamp the company’s catalog. When furniture sales recovered, DutchCreek Design was ready to meet demand.
Today, DutchCreek Design builds executive home office furniture, entertainment centers, TV stands, and occasional tables. Its collections pair traditional styling with updated features, giving customers classic designs suited to contemporary homes. The Paris collection, for example, features a detailed crown that brings elegance and a sense of history to the home office.
Outside the shop, James has a long-term interest in trees. Since 2002, he has planted several thousand—a fitting investment for someone whose business depends on wood and who is thinking about the future.
